What to Expect When Starting Therapy

Starting therapy can feel exciting, uncomfortable, intimidating, or even a little strange. You may not know exactly what to expect, and that's okay. My goal is to create a welcoming, comfortable space where you can show up as yourself and begin wherever you are.

In-Person Therapy

When arriving in the space, clients take off their shoes to feel at home (and keep our floors as clean as possible). The space is welcoming and cozy, with none of the overhead fluorescent lighting giving it that doctor's office feel.

Sessions typically last between 50 and 60 minutes, and we meet based on your current concerns, goals, and availability. While sessions are generally scheduled weekly or as clinically appropriate, we can talk together about what frequency makes the most sense for you.

Virtual Therapy

Virtual therapy is also available to individuals who reside in Ohio when it is clinically appropriate. You can participate from the comfort and privacy of your own space while still receiving the same collaborative, individualized approach to therapy.

Whether we meet in person or virtually, my goal is to create a space where you can feel comfortable being yourself and talking about what brought you to therapy.

Your First Therapy Session

During our first session, we'll review privacy and confidentiality, in addition to any assessments completed prior to your appointment. During this time, I'll be getting to know you, learning more about your history, and exploring the topics you'd like to address during the course of therapy.

I'll also share my thoughts based on the information you provide and begin working with you to understand what may be contributing to the concerns you're experiencing.

This is also a time for you to get to know me and ask questions. Therapy is a collaborative process, and finding a therapist who feels like a good fit matters.

You don't need to have the perfect words or know exactly what you want to talk about. We can figure that out together.

What Happens After the First Session?

You may start to feel better after our first session, like a weight has been lifted, or you may feel a whole range of emotions. That's okay!

Therapy isn't a quick process, which can be hard when we live in a world where we want quick solutions and fixes to our troubles. Sometimes, simply having a space to talk about what you're experiencing can feel helpful. Other times, therapy may bring up difficult emotions or things you haven't thought about in a while.

We'll take the time to address your concerns, explore patterns and experiences, and work toward the changes that can help you live a life that feels more genuine and meaningful to you.

Questions About Starting Therapy?

If you have questions about what to expect during your first therapy session, whether in person or virtually, please reach out. I'm happy to answer your questions and help you decide whether therapy feels like the right next step for you.

You don't have to commit to therapy just because you reach out. Sometimes, the first step is simply having a conversation.
