Meet Phil Hughes, LPCC-S: Your Perrysburg Therapist
I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Supervisor (LPCC-S) and Certified Mental Health and Nutrition Clinical Specialist (CMNCS) from Evergreen Certifications and offer in-person counseling in Perrysburg and online therapy throughout Ohio. I am an affirmative LGBTQ+ therapist and my work is rooted in genuineness, warmth, care, and a deep curiosity about each individual’s lived experience.
People typically, but not always, come to therapy when they are having a hard time in life and need a safe space to explore and process their concerns without judgment. I offer a space, usually with coffee in hand, where you can be heard, explore what is going on, and find solutions when needed.
I believe therapy should feel like a collaborative process. You know yourself and your life better than anyone, and my role is to help you better understand what you are experiencing, identify what may be getting in your way, and figure out where you want to go from here.
Experience & Training
I earned my Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Bowling Green State University in 2013. Throughout my career, I have worked in community mental health settings with individuals ranging in age from 8 to 80. For almost a decade, I worked exclusively with college students at BGSU, supporting students through a wide range of mental health concerns, life transitions, relationships, identity development, and the challenges that come with navigating adulthood.
These experiences have taught me how to work with a wide variety of concerns while recognizing something I believe is at the heart of good therapy: sometimes people simply need a space where they can feel heard, understood, and accepted.
I continue to expand my knowledge through conferences, continuing education, and certifications that spark my interest and support the work I do with clients. I am particularly interested in the connection between mental health, behavior, identity, and overall well-being.
Why Did I Choose Therapy?
As someone who attended therapy as a child and throughout various points in my life, I know what it can feel like to sit on the other side of the conversation. Those experiences helped shape my desire to create a space where individuals can address their concerns, better understand themselves, and continue growing into who they want to be.
I find it incredibly rewarding when clients have those light-bulb moments when something finally clicks, when they begin living more in alignment with who they are, or when they start to feel more confident in themselves and their choices.
I don't believe therapy is about becoming someone else. I believe it is about understanding yourself more deeply and having the support to build a life that feels more authentic and meaningful to you.
My Approach to Therapy
My approach is genuine, collaborative, trauma informed, and grounded in curiosity. I don't believe there is one right way to do therapy because there isn't one right way to be a person. I use a blend of CBT, DBT, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution-Focused, and Person-Centered approaches based on your needs.
Whether you are dealing with anxiety, depression, ADHD, relationship concerns, life transitions, questions about identity, emotional eating, body image concerns, or simply feeling stuck, therapy can provide a place to slow down and make sense of what is happening.
My goal is to meet you where you are, help you understand where you want to go, and work with you to figure out the next steps.
Nutrition & Bariatrics
I have a particular passion for working with individuals who are navigating the emotional and behavioral aspects of weight loss, including those using GLP-1 medications or considering or recovering from bariatric surgery. As a bariatric patient myself, I understand that these experiences can involve much more than physical changes. They can bring shifts in identity, relationships, body image, and our relationship with food. I believe this community deserves compassionate support from someone who understands these experiences firsthand. While this is an area I am especially passionate about, it is just one part of my broader clinical work.
